Over the weekend before the Jan. ’25 ESU *intensive*, Ms. Sohn wrote to the class, asking those enrolled to watch the trailer for Little America and email back “what you think of the series” with just that to go on.
Here are some students’ thoughts!

In the trailer, I saw the different immigrants . . . with different faces, ages, nationalities. They each had their own story and situation when they came to the US.
Although there was sadness, fear, and failure somewhere, overall the people overcame their challenges and took opportunities to go their own road and reach their goals successfully.
There is a huge variety of nationalities in Little America, where the people can make their dreams come true.
It’s an inspirational story for the immigrants.

Thank you very much for introducing yourself and letting us know what the classes will look like.
The series Little America presented in the trailer looks interesting, and I am excited to see all of these stories from the beginning to the end.
My spouse and I also have a dream to build our own house, so the story Faraz is the one that I will be waiting to see the most.
I consider the reading practice as one of the most important things to learn a foreign language, so as per my opinion it will be very nice not only to watch the series but also to read the stories and maybe to write short essays on what we have read.
I have absolutely no idea about the obstacles that Faraz is facing during the making his dream coming true. I can only guess the most obvious and common obstacle that usually interferes with such big plans – it is the lack of either time or funds. But since you mentioned the obstacle, I suspect that the root cause of the difficulties that Faraz needs to overcome is much more complicated.
At my late thirties I can say for sure that I have seen few movies that are better than books on the basis of which these movies were created. But for sure I am talking about the books and movies in my native language or translated to it.
It may be interesting to compare the writings, and the films based on these writings, but in U.S. English.
Also, it’s really interesting that the series are coming from Apple TV and not from Netflix, which seems to be filming these days everything that surrounds us 🙂

I have watched the trailer now. I think our lessons will be amazing and interesting. And I want to write stories about immigrants like this.

I have watched the video that you had sent. Usually, it’s a little difficult to me to explain what I have seen but I will try. I saw some scenes from different people’s lives. There are people from different countries and communities, and in general it was funny stories. I think it will be interesting to see full stories in the class. Maybe I will be able to say more about those stories after that.

I look forward to joining your class.
This TV show trailer describes eight different stories about immigrants in the USA. I assume that the main idea of this show is following a dream. There are diverse characters with their own experiences who struggle with new life conditions. I hope this series can inspire and teach me, because I’m also immigrant who faces to daily difficulties like the people in this show.

New York is a place for new starts – where people from all over come to rebuild their lives. “Little America” shows how immigrants adapt.
1. They find a new home but remember their homeland.
2. They’re surprised by new things like taxes and lifestyle.
3. Some pick up new hobbies, like volleyball, to connect with others.
4. Cowboys take on new jobs, like fast food, to adjust.
5. Some dream of becoming Hollywood stars.
Even through hard times, immigrants stay hopeful for a better future, though they may feel sad about home. It’s a natural part of adapting.

I would like to share my opinion about this trailer. Watching it, I feel a lot emotions. I think everyone who watched this video saw themselves. . . . These are people who come to an unfamiliar place, where they get acquainted with taxes. . . but they miss their families. It’s really hard! But despite everything, we enjoy what we have, we learn, we look for ourselves. It’s amazing! America – motivates.

I am so happy classes start very soon.
I just started watching the series. For now, I think the series tells us stories about people who experience various difficulties as immigrants – like me – and inspires us to never give up.

I watched this trailer and I think that we are new immigrants in America, and we are absolutely different people, but we all have our own dreams, goals. And to archive it, we mustn’t give up; we must pursue our dreams no matter what happens.
America is a country of opportunities – if you work very hard and never forget your dream, there’s an excellent chance that it will come true.

I watched the trailer and I think these 8 stories about immigrants will be interesting.

I was thinking about these two phrases – “speak to the strength of the human spirit” and “celebrate the texture of America’s cultural tapestry.”
For me, it’s about the strong character that an immigrant develops. This new life keeps you in constant change, shaping your vision in a multicultural place, while you still preserve your identity in this amazing country.
